who discovered iron

Who discovered iron? The name comes from Scandinavian “iarn” and many stories, some outlandish or incredulous have come forth to say how iron was discovered. But it may have been through an accident that iron was discovered when pieces of ore were included in fires. This lead to the observation that the longer the iron ore was heated, the stronger the metal produced and this in turn lead to the creation of the furnace.

Iron has been present since the prehistoric times and the earliest known writings about the metal is dated from China in 2550 BC. Bronze is easier to extract than iron but this was abandoned by 500 BC as the lack of copper and the abundance of iron lead ancient peoples, such as the Hindus to find new techniques to exploit the metal. This technology was later learned by the Etruscans in Northern Italy allowing for the abundant metal to be used in both homes and in warfare.
